About the project
Inspired by remarkable historical events and the real journals of nineteenth-century artist Marie Bashkirtseff, THE REINCARNATION OF MARIE is a sweeping romantic drama about destiny, memory, and the enduring power of love.
Paris, 1953. University student Yann Roussel discovers the extraordinary journal of Marie Bashkirtseff — a gifted young artist who died of tuberculosis in 1884 at just twenty-five. Her wit, passion, and fierce love of life consume him. What begins as admiration becomes an impossible obsession.
For years Yann retraces Marie’s footsteps through Paris — her home, her favorite places, and ultimately her tomb — convinced he has fallen hopelessly in love with someone history has already claimed.
Then, on the eve of his deployment to the Algerian War, the impossible happens.
He meets nineteen-year-old Marya Courventin, a pianist who bears an uncanny resemblance to Marie. She has never read Marie’s journals, yet unknowingly speaks the same words, shares the same dreams, and carries the same fears. Yann is forced to confront a mystery beyond reason: is Marya an astonishing coincidence, or has the soul he loved found its way back to him?
Over one unforgettable weekend in Paris and the autumn countryside of Burgundy, two young lovers experience a lifetime together before war and illness threaten to separate them forever.
Framed by the American veteran who records Yann’s confession, THE REINCARNATION OF MARIE is not a conventional reincarnation story or supernatural thriller. It is an intimate, emotionally grounded romance that invites audiences to decide for themselves whether love can survive beyond death.
